Italian Prepositions

Prepostions in Italian vary from those in English in the same manner that articles and demonstratives do. In addition, they are the introduction to the double consonant and one huge difference from English, a mandatory combination/contraction of words. Where in English this does not exist the differences in Italian pronunciation demand this for flow. The prepostions also follow the same pattern as articles alone because of the combining with the articles.

a “to” or “at”
da “from” or “to”
di “to” or “at”
in “of”
su “on”

il lo l’ la i gli le
a al allo all’ all ai agli alle
da dal dallo dall’ dalla dai dagli dalle
di del dello dell’ della dei degli delle
in nel nello nell’ nella nei negli nelle
su sul sullo sull’ sulla sui sugli sulle

One thing to note that will follow into other lessons is that when a word ending in a vowel is combined with a word beginning in a consonant that the consonant is doubled. Both consonants are pronounced. Another thing that differs slightly from English but not entirely is the differentiation between “a” and “in”; one uses “a” to say you are in a city, a place of transportion, the post office, a business that does not end in the suffix -ria, -eca, or cia, theater or at a concert; one uses “in” to say you are in a country, region, mode of transportation, a business that ends in the suffix -ria, -cia, or -eca, or in the bank. This one is straight memorization. One is “in” the train “a” the station. “nel treno alla stazione” One is “in” Italy “a” Roma.
