Important Italian Verbs

Your most important verbs are, shocker, the most irregular. The ability “to be” “to go” “to do” and “to have” and the uses do not, unfortunately correspond exactly to those in English.

The infinitive “to go” andare is used almost exactly the same as English, for beginners you can think of it as exactly the same.

andare singular plural
vado andiamo
vai andate
va vanno

In Tuscany many times “vo” is used rather than “vado”

The infinitive “to do” is also “to make” and there are quite a few instances where in English you “take” a thing and in Italian you “do or make” a thing.

fare singular plural
faccio facciamo
fai fate
fa fanno

In Tuscany many times “fo is used rather than “faccio.”

The infinitive “to have” avere is used fairly similar to the way it is used in English with a number of important exceptions that will be covered in Expressions.

avere singular plural
ho abbiamo
hai avete
ha hanno

There are two forms of “to be” “essere”; which is used to identify Nationality, personal characteristics, identifying objects, expressing possesion and telling time; and “stare” which shows temporary states, location and health. Both are used in other tenses as you progress in learning, but the easiest way to remember the difference is essere does not change and stare does–one is always American, tall, intelligent, etc. but one is not always at the train station or sick.

essere singular plural
sono siamo
sei siete
e sono

stare singular plural
sto stiamo
stai state
sta stanno
